comeback on patrol. >> reporter: the santa cruz police department has fewer than a force. everyone in the department knows everyone in the department so, it's understandable why the chief gave everyone time off. cruz police we're providing grief counseling services to our officers and we are doing the best job that we can as recover from this event. >> reporter: during that time, the streets of santa cruz will be patroled by two agencies. the santa cruz sheriff's department and the california highway patrol business during the mourning period. take a look for yourself. on wednesday, officers from both agencies were working together to investigate this car crash in town. chp was taking the report and sheriff's deputies were directing traffic. both agencies will also be patroling the street and responding to 911 calls as reported in santa cruz. >> vogel

the two officers were killed while investigating jeremy authorites say, both officers were shot on the front steps of goulet's home. that eventually led to a deadly shoot- out with other santa cruz officers. camera. at least. 35 rounds could be heard. all fired in 12 seconds. some of the bullets hitting a nearyby garage. police say, when goulet was found, he was wearing body armor and had three guns. believed to belong to the fallen officers. >> kron 4's charles clifford continues our team coverage. and details where the santa cruz shooting took place. if you have a comment or story idea for stanley, e- mail us at peoplebehavingbadly@kron4.co m >> reporter: tuesday's shootings occurred in central santa cruz, a little more than a mile north of the beach. around 3:30 tuesday afternoon, two visited a home here at 822 north bran-ca-forty drive. this is where were both shot and killed by the suspect, jeremy goulet. after the shooting, goulet the scene. a short time later, as first responders tended to the fallen officers, goulet returned to the scene. he spotted here, behind 822 bran-ca-forty, on the other side of a fence. officers

a visibly distraught police chief ken vogel talked about his former partner on the force. >> i had a special relationship with butch. partners in the early 90s. only coworker but friend. >> reporter: baker during his tenure was also a training officer. he was promoted to sergent in investigations. the chief added that in addition to making a significant impact on the department. professional, personally he wasy also proud about the fact his son entered law >> he leaves behind kelly his wife, his son adam who is a community officer in department plus daughters gillian and ashley. >> reporter: elizabeth butler. butler had worked for the santa cruz police department for 10 years, this after attending university of santa cruz while majoring in community services. she grew up in torrence california. on facebook, friends spoke glowingly of her.

one wrote, beth was so wonderful. she did so much good fro her community. such a truly great person. butler leaves behind her partner peter and their two young sons, ages 5 and one. terisa estacio, kron 4 news, kron four news.

and this was the scene this evening in santa cruz, as the community came out to hold a vigil to grieve the death of the officers lost an officer in the line of duty until yesterday. many people sat down and wrote notes of condolences. a community activist talked with kron four. about the idea to put this gathering together tonight. all of the sympathy notes will be collected and given to the families of both fallen officers, butler and baker. we have the goulet family's reaction to the deadly shootings. still to come later in this newscast. but first a look at weather, >> jacqueline: big changes,

continuing to grow -the city still has major hurdles to climb. -the city moved ahead with redeveloping the former oakland army base and avoided layoffs for the first time since the 2008 financial collapse. the mayor also called on eveyone in the city to work together to lower crime rates. in national news. the white house is saying. efforts to avoid the 85- billion dollars in automatic budget cuts. are unlikely to succeed. before those cuts are set to kick in on friday. president barack obama and congressional leaders are scheduled to meet friday-- the day of the deadline. white house spokesman jay carney says, the friday talks are intended to be a "constructive discussion". about how to keep the cuts from having harmful consequences. meanwhile, agencies and workers affected by the cuts. are laying out what it will all mean. among the agencies affected. is immigrations customs enforcement also known as ice to prepare for those cuts. federal immigration authorities have released hundreds of detainees. authorities say, they were in the process of being removed from the u-s. the white house says, they were *not notified. immigration authorities say, the detainees are what they and non- criminal". and that many. though not all of them, are being monitored. right now-- san bernardino county officials have determined how much the six- day manhunt for former los angeles police

officer christopher dorner will cost. a department spokesperson says, the initial cost for the search and investigation round out to about 550- thousand dollars. the sheriff's department led a search in the san bernardino mountains. involving 10 other agencies. dorner was found dead in a burned cabin after a shootout with police earlier this month. it's believed he killed himself. right now -- there is reassuring news for pregnant women. who are miserable feel all online with morning sickness. a denmark study found, no popular anti- nausea drug zofran. will harm their babies. one in 10 pregnant women experience nasuea and vomiting. but many skip using a medicine, for fear of side effects. no drugs are currently approved for morning sickness in the u-s. but experts say, zofran has been a top choice. where would bois 1 south

there is an increase of young women diagnosed with breast cancer the increase was seen in women ages 25 to 39. of all races and ethnicities. experts say. a woman diagnosed at a young age is more likely to have an aggressive form of the disease. researchers say. this means that the numbers have jumped from about 250 cases each year in the mid 1970's to about 850 cases annually in recent years. experts aren't sure what's driving these increases, or why they don't see similar numbers for older women or younger women with earlier stage breast cancer.
